NEW BEDFORD — Laurie Obuchon announced she was going out, stormed into the bedroom and began gathering up some things.
She was just weeks into being drug-free and the urge to use was overpowering.
I had so much going on in my head, the Taunton woman said. I was out the door.
One of her roommates blocked her path. She sat right on me, Obuchon said. She wouldnt let me go. I didnt think there were people like that.
At the House of Hope, a transitional housing program founded by Brockton native Bob Hughes, staying drug-free and sober is a shared commitment.
I thought I had friends when I was getting high, Obuchon said. Those were party partners. These are friends.
Between 40 and 50 people recovering from drugs or alcohol, or who had been homeless share apartments in a cluster of buildings on Ashley Boulevard and Coffin Avenue at the House of Hope.
