do most child abusers have a mental problem?

I think the song "way down the line" by offspring is a perfect song that describes the patterns of abuse.

Nothing changes cause it’s all the same
The world you get’s the one you give away
It all just happens again
Way down the line
There is a chain that’s never broken
You know the story it’s sad but true
An angry man gets drunk and beats his kids
The same old way his drunken father did
What comes around well it goes around

    Yes.

Absolutely YES! Many abusers have suffered abuse themselves, yet many people who have been abused grow up to be loving, nurturing people. Not all emotionally disturbed people commit crimes, but abusing a child is something a deeply disturbed human being does.

i dont know , it may depend on what you consider a mental problem

most people with mental problems arent child abusers.

contrary to what most people think , proving someone has a mental problem does not make them "not guilty by reason of insanity", to get "not guilty by reason of insanity" a jury must be convinced that the defendent didnt know what he/she was doing was wrong ( a paranoid person may believe they were killing the other person in self defense).

    That’s a can of worms.

From a very simplistic perspective society tends to view any behaviour that falls outside of ‘normality’ or they define as ‘bad’ as a ‘mental problem’.

Nevertheless. . . yes. Frequently abusers have histories of abuse themselves

Yes, unfortunately we choose to incarcerate them rather than treat them. That is abuse too. And usually the mental problems are caused by child abuse. So by punishing child abusers we are further abusing them. It is a sad cycle.
